This is a piece I did way back in 2006 in kind of a watercolor style, but just recently ~~dragged out of the closet~~ dusted off and polished up a bit. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but there was always something that just didn't seem right about it before...so I went back and added some shadows, highlights and reflected light, and also worked on the hair a face a little bit more.

Been dealing with eye problems, and more recently dental issues, but am still working when I can and will get through this okay...just can't believe it's been six weeks since I last posted. Time flies so fast lately.

I also just realized I haven't posted anything on the "Raw" blog at all this year. I've been working on a couple of pieces for "Raw" that should be ready soon, so please check it out in the next couple of weeks or so...hopefully sooner. Perhaps I can post a preview in the next few days...

The other day I was trying to figure out what to put up for auction, and came across poor lil' Alexandro, a piece I did waaaaay back in 2006, yet hadn't listed in over 2 years, and had yet to post here.

I have some other pieces that I've yet to post on the blog, so will be reviewing them and posting more in the future. There are some however -- some of my very early work -- that is just too embarrassing crude -- so it may never see the light of day again.

In many places of the world the days are getting longer, and summer is just a couple of months away. Unfortunately, that's not the case here in the Emerald City, as the days are getting shorter (and wetter!).

All the more reason to celebrate the sunny days of summer, to hold onto the memories that will help get us through the coming winter months.

Matthew is something else you might want to hold onto. (That was even more awkward than my segue last month, but I'm stickin' with it for now!) A good friend commented on how he liked how I had carried forward the motif of the green foliage into the design of the tattoo. I can see that now, but I must admit it was a complete accident. Still, it's always fascinating to hear how others interpret a piece of art.

Trying to continue my attempt at returning to my looser style of the past (and I mean a LONG time ago), here's my latest piece, "Ramon", a portrait of a man not quite as hesitant to pose as his predecessor below.

Being a flexible sort of guy, this of course is just one of the many ~~positions~~ poses he can strike. Depending on his popularity over the next year, perhaps I can convince him to show us some more. Poses that is.

For months now I've been saying I'm working on trying to loosen up my style of painting. While there are other more detailed pieces in the works, I hope that DAMON here represents the beginning of a trend towards a looser style...the way I used to paint when I was a wee lad (well, maybe not "wee").

Damon is a cheeky sort, (here come the puns), he likes to show off his ~~ass~~ assets, and is actually a past winner of at the Golden Globes. Okay, I'll stop while I'm barely ahead.

Seriously, as I was working on this, I imagined a guy who shows up for a modeling session, but isn't quite sure how far he wants to go.
Or is he?

Tribute to David Beckham

This has been one of the toughest portraits I've ever done. David Beckham is so well known and has so many fans around the world, I knew I'd have a difficult time trying to capture that famous face.

And then there are the tattoos! I had no idea that he had so many, and he seems to be adding more all the time. I think perhaps he's a little beefier in my take on him, but hope his true essence shows through at the same time.

Not only is he arguably one of the best, if not the best soccer player in the world, but he's also a true gentleman, the father of three children, and is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Along with many other charitible efforts, he runs the David Beckham Academy, a soccer school for children in the UK.

On top of all that, he's hot.

I hope I did him justice. Leave a comment, let me know what you think!

In response to his many, many loyal fans around the world, I am so pleased to present the release of this Premier Limited Edition Print of the portrait I did for the legendary Francesco d'Macho. This is slightly different than the one I did back in 2007 -- I made some changes, and hopefully some improvements, but I'll let you be the judge -- the earlier version is posted in the May 2007 archives (and also in the banner at the top of the page).

This Premier Edition of Francesco is limited to only 30 prints. Every print is personally hand signed and numbered.

I am deeply grateful to Francesco for all his support and kindness -- he's truly a great, gracious and immensely talented man.

I've actually finished a NEW Illustration — the long awaited POOLBOY 2 -- Film at Eleven! The First Edition of this Limited Edition Print is up for auction today!

I know I keep saying I’m going to loosen up and relax my style, but each one becomes more detailed! I probably spent more time on the railings leading into the pool (and all those reflections) than any other part, although perhaps it just seemed that way.

I just wanted to show you some of what's been keeping me so busy lately. I've been working on an experiment -- my first piece done entirely in colored pencil.

This is just the beginning, and I wonder what I'm getting into, as I've been working on this (off and on) for over a month now, and I'm not even finished with the FACE! lol...

I think I should've started with a much larger size. The face alone is only about 2 inches from hair to chin...and so my poor eyes wear out pretty quickly. My poor old eyes! I know, get out the violins.

Anyway, since I took this pic about 2 days ago, the eyes are now brown. I thought a greenish-gray would be nice, but am liking the brown better.

At this rate I should be finished by 2010?

Hopefully sooner...

In the meantime, I'll be posting other pieces I'm working on, and invite you as always to check out the current men up for auction.

Jungle Heat

Coming up at Eleven: "Jungle Heat". In Seattle. In November.

Actually yesterday was unseasonably warm, at least for the Emerald City. And SUNNY too, a beautiful day for one of the country's many Anti Prop 8 Marches. Although the organizers were expecting about 1,000 -- over 6,000 people turned out to march! It was fantastic. Unfortunately I didn't hear about it until just after the parade passed by on it's way downtown. Still, my heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out to the hundreds of thousands who turned out across the country to stand up for equal rights and love.

My thanks also go out to my loyal customers and friends who have helped make both "Zack" and "Morning ~~Wood~~ Sun" almost instant classics. They have both sold very well in just a month or so (the First Editions sold for almost twice the asking price), with many customers asking when I'll relist them. I am so grateful to all of you for your awesome support, especially during these rocky economic times.

Did the summer just whiz by or is it just me?

We had a strange August here in the Northwest. Like last year, it resembled October, quite cool, except for one week of very hot weather. Then September was beautiful...temps in the mid-70's to 80 degrees.

Suddenly the 'real' October arrived, and it seems like winter has arrived along with it. So...I thought what better way to remember summer than to recreate a scene from everyone's favorite time of year.

The result is "Jake". Not as beefy as most of the guys in my work, but to some, perhaps many, that's a plus?

Morning Sun...

I probably started working on this maybe 2 years ago. Kept putting it aside, coming back to it from time to time, adding shadows and highlights a little bit at a time.

I thought the hard part was over, until I realized I had an even more difficult time coming up with a title! There are titles that may have been more appropriate, or more cheeky, but at the same time wouldn't be allowed on Ebay.

So, while "Morning Sun" may sound a little Thomas Kincaid-ish (ugh), I hope the image itself bears no resemblance to those created by "The Painter of Light".

When I first started taking painting lessons back in ~~1872~~ 1972...the best teacher I ever had made us paint with a large brush -- that way it prevented one from getting too picky, too fussy, and adding too much detail. It also forced us to finish the painting within a 3-4 hour period -- something I haven't done in many, many years -- lately it's been more like 3-4 weeks... :)

One of these days I'm just going to go wild and TRY to loosen up again. Like my friend Doug. His work is so fluid and spontaneous.

I tried to loosen up with "Felipe", and perhaps succeeded microscopically with the sky...but still, I got carried away in other areas...I think. I can't promise the next one will be a return to impressionism, but...I'd certainly like to experiment a bit.

For those of you living in or traveling to Los Angeles, I'll have a piece in a group show at the Antebellum Gallery, an 'adult' image entitled "Test Drive". My friend Doug has posted a picture of the illustration on his blog.

Some may feel I'm being a hypocrite or a prude not listing more of my adult work here, but for now I'd like to keep them separate. Some of my loyal customers and also my straight clients do not wish to view the adult pieces, which I can understand and respect.

I should really start a second blog for those pieces, but in the meantime, many thanks to Doug, and I hope you'll check out the show.

I can't believe it's been a month since I last posted. Time flies waaaay to quickly. I've been struggling with health issues, but also trying to finish a piece to send to the Antebellum Gallery in LA for a group show.

I also finished this commission for a client who was a big fan of the late Steve Fox (aka Hunt Rommel), who was an adult film star for a few years in the first half of the 1990's, before a serious a serious struggle with mental illness took over his life. He tragically committed suicide in October 1997.

Peace to his memory.

Hope everyone is having a great spring. It's been very strange here in the Emerald City. 10 days ago it we had a record temp of 78 degrees F. Five days later it SNOWED, and then snowed again the next day, setting the record for the latest snowfall in the greater Seattle area. Things are looking a little better for this coming weekend...

One of my first illustrations was of this guy named Troy...but I was never quite happy with it, even though it sold well.

So I trotted him out about a month ago and slowly but surely transformed him into your ~~typical, average~~ hunky, musclebound ~~hustler~~ lifeguard, with the I.Q. of a ~~rotting pumpkin~~ Ivy-Leager who decided to ~~use his assets~~ throw away his education, and instead make some real money...for a lot less work!

Now I'm a little embarrassed.

Right after posting the 'thank you' post, talking about how well things were going on ebay...I almost had second thoughts, thinking perhaps I might jinx things...and sales might drop off...

Been too long since my last post thanks mainly to an argument I've been having with my computer...and so far it's winning. I thought I had it all fixed after I bought a new memory card on Sunday...but nooooooooo. Still having problems...

I wish I could understand all the techy-jargon but I think that while my right-brain may function okay, I have a feeling my left-brain resembles something close to a rotting pumpkin -- I just cannot keep megabites, gigabites, RAM, ROM, and all those other technical terms straight.

Anyway, I hope to get things working better very soon. In the meantime, I hope you like 'Ricardo'!?

Again, I didn't know till the last few hours how this would turn out. It kind of looks like a book cover for an update of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Men". (Well, not little...)

Kind of has a retro look to it...almost like he's standing in front of a painted set from "Gone With the Wind"...but of course with no Scarlett in sight!

As I've said before, I never really completely know how an illustration will turn out until I've finished it.

Take "PoolBoy" for example. I wanted to give him that 'come and get me' look, but -- now that it's done -- and after I put is aside for a few days...he looks, to me anyway, a little more skeptical, like he's saying "You didn't hire me to clean your pool!"

Well, that's true I guess. I don't have a pool to clean. Not too many pools in sunny Seattle...

Seriously, the great thing about art is everyone sees something different, even when it if the artwork falls into the 'realism' category. So look into his eyes...what are they telling you?

Can't stop thinking about Hawaii, especially right now, as it's about 7:30pm and trying desperately hard to snow here in the Emerald City.

It'll be a year in February since I was there, and still can't get paradise out of my mind. So...the next best thing I could do...is to pull the memories from the half of my brain that's still barely functioning, and add a little (well, not LITTLE) "Russell" to the picture.

This started out as a new pose for Brandon, but as I progressed...and obsessed a little too much...I realized that although he was slowly but surely turning into his own creation. Looks like they could be related...maybe even close cousins. Either that or Brandon's had some work done.

No, I didn't just wake up from a five-day bender! Maybe 25 years ago. (I'm kidding of course!) Just can't believe how time flies...January SIXTH already...

A good deal of my time these past few days was spent putting finishing touches on "Kevin". I thought I was finished several times, but kept coming back to tweak certain things. As usual I could keep tweaking here and there, but again, it's the SIXTH...gotta say "it's okay" and move on.

Sleeping Beauty...

I turned to my friend Doug for help in titling this piece. I always have such a difficult time coming up with a suitable name for my work...so I end up doing just that...giving them a 'name'. (In fact, before I heard from Doug, I named this piece "Evan".)

It seemed to deserve something more, or at least different, but all I could think of was trite, obvious, or corn-ball titles. Then Doug came to the rescue with "Sleeping Beauty", which I like. I hope that doesn't sound conceited...but it does seem to fit perfectly.

Tall, dark, and...Dwayne!

It's always fascinating how we all have our own preferences when it comes to attraction.

For several years I went out to brunch once a month with a group of friends, to a place with both cruisy waiters and patrons, so naturally there was always someone walking by, distracting us or diverting our attention from our meal and/or conversation.

Eyes would dart about, knowing glances would be exchanged, but I quickly realized that we definitely had different tastes. Some guy would walk by that I wouldn't even notice, while my friends would practically wet themselves.

On the flip side, a guy I would find attractive wouldn't even register on their richter scale. Especially when it came to my friend who likes the twinkier type.

"Dwayne" is a perfect example, albeit a perhaps exaggerated one. They would never even know if someone like him walked by. I, on the other hand would probably forget my friends were even in the room... :)

Beauty truly IS in the eye of the beholder.

Tyler...a ray of sunshine...

...during these dark days of winter. Wait a second, it isn't even winter yet...at least not in this part of the world. And I suppose many of you aren't experiencing Daylight Savings Time like we are here in the Emerald City, where it gets dark at 4:15 in the afternoon...

So...even though I started this illustration about six weeks ago, it seems appropriate to have finished it and post it now. This past week we had anywhere from 4 to almost 10 inches of rain in less than 24 hours...the freeway was flooded for miles, many roads washed out...the worst disaster in many years here.

Working on Tyler was therefore a pleasant distraction. I hope it is for you as well. I got a little too anal (no, not THAT kind of anal) while working on it...I need to loosen up...as soon as I finish the one I'm working on now! :)

P.S. I must admit the snow we got (the day before it rained) was a very pleasant distraction as well. Felt like I was in a huge snowglobe... :)

I never really know how an illustration will turn out until I'm finished. (Or Swedished. HA!)

This one started out quite differently, with more of a tropical feel...on the edge of a beach in Brazil or Hawaii.

But as I look at it now, Eddie seems to have wandered onto the set of a high-school production of The Lord of the Rings.

Or the porn version...The Lord of the "______________".

Doug Smith...

I just found out the other day that my blogger-buddy Doug Smith is also an artist. And an incredibly talented one at that!

He paints with passion and emotion, and his paintings reflect those qualities in a way that are haunting and hypnotic.

His most recent work, a self-portrait, is one of those rare pieces that I find hard to stop staring at – one where if you look at it long enough, new “discoveries” will appear where they didn’t seem to exist just moments earlier.

"Bubblebutt"? Too cliche.

"Nice Ass"? "Power Bottom? "Golden Globes"? No, no, no. All of these tend to minimize the other "features" of the body, even if one's eyes might settle on that one particular area.

Plus, they're not exactly Ebay-friendly. In the end (sorry), I settled for "Symmetry 3", to go along with the first two in what I guess is now a series.

During the past few months I've been fortunate to talk with a gentleman who's interested in helping me put together a book of my work so far. Not sure what form or forms this will take, but just knowing that something like this might be possible has me both very humbled and excited -- and, like a typical artist -- obsessing over details.

So...I've been going back over some of the work of the past 2 years and zeroing in on little details here and there. Fixing this, tweaking that (no, not THAT), adding details and layers not seen before -- in general working to make this project turn out as best as it can.

This illustration started out quite differently. Luke was just leaning against a wall, with dark shadows (remember "Dark Shadows?"!) pooling behind him...

At some point it started to take on that 'circuit party' feel...as I tried to give Luke that glow that comes from a night on the dance floor with a hundred other sweaty men. Or at least from what I've seen and heard.

I've never actually been to a CP as I don't exactly have the body to carry it off. And that's the understatement of the year. One time long ago a guy told me I had a nice chest. I said to myself "WHAT chest?"

I digress. On closer inspection, perhaps Luke has something else on his mind other than dancing...?

I'm excited to announce that after a six-week (and unexpected) hiatus, we're finally back on Ebay with my first auction featuring Limited Edition Gliclee Prints of Mateo, Ken, Brandon 2, and the First Edition Print from the illustration I did in honor of Rob Sager. This edition is very small, limited to only 29 prints.

I tried out a new printer, but ended up going back to my trusted Epson, and have switched from canvas to an amazing Strathmore Fine Art paper that produces super-crisp detail and vibrant color on a soft, satin finish.

Nothing new on Ebay until...

...I can get my printer and canvas issues worked out. Over the past several weeks, my trusted Epson has been refusing to accept the canvas I've always used, so I finally broke down and bought a different model.

Big mistake. The new one has a totally different type of ink, combining all the colors in one cartridge, compared to my old printer which had separate cartridges for each color. After two days of trying (the colors came out with this very strange reddish glow)...I'm gonna have to go back to the old model, which I hope to purchase by Wednesday.

I'm deeply indebted to my extremely patient Ebay customers, who have been so understanding during this circus. It may still take another week or two before I'm able to send out their prints, depending on when I can pick up the new printer and if I'll need to exchange the canvas.

It will all work out -- it's happened before -- these printers just don't last forever. I'm so fortunate to have such kind and loyal customers!

Rico is the kind of guy one might run into down a back alley, or on the subway, or at the loading dock. Or...at the bank in a suit and tie, or maybe out of a suit and tie! He's whatever you want him to be...

This illustration also longer than usual...and as a result ended up being one of my most hyperrealistic pieces to date. It's time to loosen up, so be on the lookout for something with more of an impressionistic feel in the near future.

Actor / Model Stephen D'Angelo

Up and coming actor and fitness model Stephen D'Angelo is a photographer's (and artist's') dream -- at 6'4" of solid muscle, with perfect proportions, it was hard (or should we say difficult) choosing a photograph to work from, but truly my pleasure to work with him.

In addition to his modeling career, Steve has appeared several times on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien". With his leading-man looks and killer physique, look for his list of credits to grow in the very near future.

Tribute to Rob Sager

This is a commission I did of Rob Sager (aka "Brett Mycles") for Chris, a fan of his. I worked for over a month on this, trying to capture his physical perfection while at the same time paying homage to his spirit.

As many of you may know, Rob died in his sleep from congestive heart failure on February 25, 2007 at the young age of only 29. Sager was a well-known fitness model, bodybuilder, personal trainer and video star. If that weren't enough, he was a pre-law student at the time of his death.

According to his obit, "He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Robert had a big heart and was always there to lend a helping hand. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

Chris has set up a MySpace page in memory of Rob, along with a Tribute Forum so that his many fans can keep his spirit alive.

TIME FLIES...

What happened to June? Man, time flies. Can't believe I've only posted a few times this month. I guess we can chalk that up to the frozen shoulder (which I can't tell if it's freezing more or starting to thaw...). It feels like it was run over by a Hummmer with no rear tires.

Let's see...Paris Hilton went to jail, got out of jail, went back to jail, then was released -- ending up on Larry King. Well, not ON Larry King. Eeeuwww...

More importantly (what ISN'T more important?), millions celebrated Gay Pride, from Billings, Montana to Tel Aviv and Sao Paulo -- with festivals and marches planned well into the fall.

Still, it went too fast. Before the clock strikes twelve, at least here on the left coast, here's an old friend from 2006...Michael.

Frozen shoulder and...

...pubic hair. That's my excuse. Well, actually not quite pubic hair, but the hair between the belly button and that found down south -- what is that called -- lower abdominal hair? Anyway, I'm still working on that commission, and those little hairs are taking a long time! Trying to get them just right, but I'm probably being too anal, pardon the pun.

Mainly however, I've been dealing with an increasingly "frozen" shoulder, much to my frustration. My right side froze last year, now it's the left. Very painful and disabling, especially when it comes to getting dressed. ARGH.

Anyway, my apologies for being out of touch. I had started another piece weeks ago and hope to post that soon. Any frozen shoulder advice would be sincerely appreciated! I'd hate for this to last 9 months or so like the other one did last year...

South America, Take Me Away...

Josh Watercolor study / Final illustration...

When I first started doing primarily male art, I would start with a pencil drawing or occasionally a watercolor study. I love watercolors, with this caveat: you can be 90% finished and then one wrong brushstroke can destroy the entire painting. Not fun.

At first I thought the watercolor (left) would be sufficient, but found over a period of a couple months that I could explore new territory and find new layers by utilizing the computer as my pencil, paintbrush, and canvas. This typically takes about 3 weeks, longer than most realize, but I hope the end result is worth it. I certainly am no longer exposed to the toxic fumes and solvents I used when I worked in oils. ...on a woman! Can you believe it? I've actually drawn or painted many women, and am certainly open to doing more. This was a drawing I did in pencil a hundred (well, maybe 99) years ago for an assignment in commercial art school -- about five years before most people had even heard the word "computer". I know, I'm old.

Several people have asked if I'd post some of my earlier work, which I am more than happy to do. This is the portrait I did waaaaay back in 1986 of my friend Niko. He wasn't/isn't Asian, I was joking. He's originally from the Europe, but moved to the Carribean when he was a young boy. We became good friends when he was dating the daughter of my high school art teacher...so long ago...can't believe time has whizzed by so quickly. This was done in oil on masonite. I can't believe it's been a week since I last posted. I've been busy working on a private commission for a new client and also injured my shoulder/upper back last Thursday.

... is named after an old friend of mine, who I haven't seen in nearly 20 years. He moved back to the Carribean, and got married.

Yup, he was straight. I tried to bend him -- what am I saying, no I didn't! I actually did a painting of him playing the piano...probably back in 1984-85? I'll have to post that at some point. He actually looked a little like this new Niko. Except he was Asian.

He was a sweet, funny, great-looking friend, who just happened to like girls. Oh well, some people are just born that way...

Prices currently start at $750 for a single figure, $1500 for two figures, often with reduced prices for multiple commissions. These prices do not include printing, as that depends on the size of the canvas used, but do include a CD of your illustration that you can then print in any size you choose.
